Empirical evidence strongly suggests that intrinsic stimuli are greater motivational predictors than extrinsic stimuli. Extrinsic drives only enhance employee motivation in some specific cases.

Giving Purpose


Real purpose can change your entire business and increase employee motivation by giving them greater ownership in what they do at work. Don’t underestimate a really good mission statement and vision for your team. Make sure your employees know what they are contributing to the team, and recognize them for it. Have monthly celebration meetings, and have rewards for your employees when they reach or exceed the goals you set, making sure those goals are coming from intrinsic drives. Your employees knowing the “why” of what they do can improve their effectiveness, create more joy in what they do, and motivate them for what’s ahead. Let your team know what kind of impact your business is having, and show them real stories of real people if you can. Sometimes showing them the tangible impact of their work will give them the purpose they need to keep working hard. Another way to give purpose is giving positive feedback to your employees when it’s warranted.
